Good Will Hunting is a 1997 film directed by director Gus Van Sant. The film earned 9 Oscar nominations (winning two of them: one for Best Original Screenplay for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and the other for Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams).
Castle Rock marketed the script for $675,000 against $775,000, which meant that Affleck and Damon could earn an additional $100,000 if the film was produced and they received credit as screenwriters. Thus, the studio put up with the idea of Affleck and Damon having the lead roles, and many studio executives say they wanted Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio instead. While Damon and Affleck had the Castle Rock meeting, director Kevin Smith was working with Affleck on Mallrats and Affleck and Damon on Chasing Amy. Seeing that both were still having problems with Castle Rock, Smith and his associate producer Scott Mosier took the script to Miramax. This eventually led to both of them being credited as co-executive producers on the film. Ultimately, Miramax sold the script to Castle Rock.
Good Will Hunting is a 1997 film directed by Gus Van Sant. It earned 9 Oscar nominations, winning two of them: one for Best Original Screenplay for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and the other for Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams. But is that all the film is?
The protagonist begins to chafe under Lambeau's high expectations, mocks the job interviews he arranges for him, and they have a heated discussion about his future. After a talk with his friend Chuckie, Will decides to accept one of the job offers. (I won't tell you the rest in case you haven't seen the movie yet).
Among the most famous phrases in human history is "know thyself". A mixture of mystery and naivety, it is something that seems so obvious that no one pays enough attention to it. The film is about just that, about knowing and what it really means to be smart. The protagonist is a mathematical genius and in the words of his psychologist, "no one can deny that".

Synopsis: Will is a rebellious young man with an uncanny intelligence, especially for mathematics. Only the advice of a lonely and bohemian professor will help him decide. (FilmAffinity)
Initially the film was going to be a crime thriller, but Damon and Affleck were convinced to change the focus and center the film on the relationship between Matt Damon's character and Robin Williams. A very wise decision because that's how we get the really powerful moments in this film. The performances of Damon and Williams are the best of the whole film, and their moments together are lived with a breathtaking intensity.
