Côte d’azur’: a summer, an era and a forbidden love that

July 1956. Belgian Prime Minister Achille van Acker has everything in place: he has arranged for 12 weeks off for his citizens and has his little lake house ready, where he plans to spend an idyllic vacation. However, an unexpected threat looms over this impeccable plan. Nothing less than one that could shake the foundations on which the pillars of the State rest: the monarchy itself.
In principle, nothing can go wrong, and yet the mission turns into pure folly when, in Pierlot’s well-laid plan to spy on the royal couple, an aristocratic woman, unfortunately as beautiful as she is intriguing, crosses his path.

Fun, entertaining and with all the characteristics I usually like in Mamen Sanchez’s novels: impeccable documentation, humor and surreal plot twists well enough embedded to be plausible. It has not been my favorite of the author’s, but it is still always a pleasure to read.
1956. Agent Pierre Pierlot (of course this is not his real name) has been sent on a secret mission to the Côte d’Azur. His assignment: to keep an eye on the young Belgian King Baudouin. Rumor has it that he is having a secret affair with his stepmother, Lilian de Rethy. Pierlot will have to check into the same exclusive hotel where they are staying and pass himself off as a rich person. This is how he will meet a beautiful young aristocrat who will upset and divert him to other horizons.
